CPHI Europe trade fair in Milan: Liveo Research presents packaging solutions for pharmaceuticals and medical devices
Basel, October 7th, 2024
From October 8th to the 10th, Liveo Research AG is presenting its full film portfolio for pharmaceutical and medical device packaging at booth 20B41 at the CPHI Europe trade fair in Milan. This is one of the world’s largest trade fairs for pharmaceuticals and medical devices.
In addition to the numerous, long-established films for tablet blisters in the high, medium and low-barrier segments, One-Material Blisters (“OMB”) made of PET and PP will once again characterize the trade fair participation of the packaging specialist this year. The base and lidding films of these innovative blister concepts are made from only one material and are designed for easy recycling of the blister material after the medication has been removed.
One-Material Blisters (“OMB”)
The OMB solution made of PET consists of the halogen-free and recyclable base film “BlisForm MA” and the corresponding PET lidding film “BlisLid MA”. Several innovative push-through and peel-off solutions are available for opening the blisters. The combination of these two products offers a safe alternative for pharmaceutical products with low barrier requirements. Extensive machine trials have shown that this is a so-called “drop-in solution”, which enables a quick and uncomplicated changeover of the packaging machines to the PET material.
The second OMB solution is made of polypropylene (PP) and is also halogen-free and recyclable. The “BlisForm MP” base film is combined with the “BlisLid MP” lidding film. This is also available with various push-through and peel-off options. This OMB meets low and medium barrier requirements.
Films for food supplements (“nutraceuticals”)
These two OMBs for pharmaceuticals are supplemented by the OMB solution “RecyForm MA” for food supplements or “nutraceuticals”, for example for vitamin or mineral tablets. This is a recyclable PET film that offers optimum product protection against external environmental influences such as light, dirt and moisture. It is also an easy-to-use “drop-in solution”. If it is combined with the “BlisLid MA” lidding film, an “OMB” is created. The special feature of this film is that it contains up to 50 percent post-consumer recyclate (PCR), e.g. from recycled plastic bottles. This blister therefore contributes to the circular economy, reduces carbon footprint and also complies with new sustainability regulations.
“RecyForm MA” can also be provided with additional barrier layers to achieve higher barrier protection. The resulting film type is called “RecyBa MA” and shows optimum thermoformability even at high speeds and reduced temperatures.
Packaging for medical devices
At CPHI Europe, the experts from Liveo Research are also presenting a broad portfolio of proven and newly developed films for the secondary packaging of medical devices: While single and multi-layer films made of APET and PETG are standard films, new types include different proportions of recyclate. The company processes a maximum of 50% post-consumer recyclate (PCR) in the inner layer of APET films. In the PETG films, a chemically processed recyclate is used, which reduces the carbon footprint of the films. Both film types achieve technical properties comparable to those of the standard films without recyclate.
Blister packaging services
The film portfolio is rounded off by the scientifically based LiveoOptima program of pharmaceutical packaging services. The individual services in this program are put together individually by the company’s experts and enable a significant reduction in cost, time and packaging material for many blister projects.
Dr. Carsten Heldmann, CEO of Liveo Research AG, explains: “Our team is very much looking forward to the CPHI Europe trade fair in Milan and especially to the personal dialog with our visitors. We will be presenting our film portfolio, which has been tried and tested over decades, as well as our newly developed films. We are tremendously excited to discuss our full range of services that combine our expertise with individual and tailor-made films that make sense for a wide variety of blister and medical device packaging applications.”
